Vuity Drops for Presbyopia: Now Available at Mittleman Eye
Around middle age, most people notice that their near vision gets progressively blurrier. By the age of 55, nearly 80% of people will suffer from age-related farsightedness, a condition better known as presbyopia. Fortunately, Mittleman Eye now offers Vuity, the first and only FDA-approved medicated eyedrop aimed at treating presbyopia. To learn more about this game-changing prescription, read on.
What Causes Presbyopia?
In your younger years, your eye’s lens is soft and malleable — frequently changing shape so that it can better pass light to the retina. Starting around the age of 40, however, your lens gets stiffer and cannot change as easily. As a result, your ability to see up-close objects and text decreases. For most people, near vision gradually declines for the ensuing 20 to 25 years.
Vuity: An Exciting New Treatment
Traditionally, the main solution for patients with presbyopia has been to continuously update their vision prescription. Some who prefer not to wear glasses or contact lenses may choose LASIK or corneal inlays to overcome presbyopia.
Now, you may use Vuity to improve the quality of your vision. Each day, you self-administer a single drop of Vuity into each eye. The medication triggers your pupil to decrease in size temporarily. Having a smaller pupil allows you to focus better at different distances and expand the total depth of focus. For most, vision improvement from Vuity lasts between six and 10 hours.
FDA Approval
Prior to the FDA granting approval to Vuity in October of 2021, the drug underwent two clinical studies to assess the safety and effectiveness of the medicated eyedrop. Both studies showed a significant improvement in the vision of participants who took Vuity over those who were given a placebo eyedrop. A large portion of the Vuity users were able to read three additional lines on a standard eye chart after one month using the treatment.
None of the hundreds of participants in the clinical studies suffered serious health consequences from using Vuity, corroborating its high standard of safety. Researchers believe it works best in patients aged 40 to 55.
